Qatar is preparing to host the World Cup from November 21 to December 18, 2022 and its 1.2 million supporters. 80% of accommodation

"We expect to receive more than a million fans during the World Cup," said Omar Al Jaber, accommodation manager at the Supreme Organizing Committee for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

1.2 million supporters is almost half of its population.

A headache for the organizing committee regarding the number of accommodation places.

“We can say that we have more than 100,000 rooms available for fans so far,” adds the accommodation manager.

80% of hotel rooms in Doha have already been reserved and the committee estimates that there will be a shortage of stock by the end of September.

Qatar will be closed to visitors without match tickets, others can stay there as long as they wish.

Qatar is spending 468 million euros a week building infrastructure to host the competition, the Qatari finance minister has said.

The organizing committee has been in turmoil since the Guardian's revelations in 2021 concerning the working conditions of immigrant workers on World Cup sites.

More than 6,500 workers have died, mainly because of the heat, since the start of the work.

As for the players, some teams had called for a boycott of the competition, like Germany in 2021 which will indeed be present on the pitch next November.
