Social networks here have been around for quite some time, and by this time there is already a fairly sweeping consensus among mental health experts that prolonged scrolling through apps can adversely affect mental state.

Social Media Fatigue is defined as a subjective feeling of physical and mental fatigue, fatigue, harassment, discomfort, anger and frustration as a result of using social networks.

Studies in the field so far have shown that exhaustion of social media can lead to a reduction in the use of social networks and even a complete cessation.

A new study by Dr. Itzik Alfasi of the Department of Behavioral Sciences at Hadassah Academic College, published in the journal Cyberpsychology: Journal of Psychosocial Research on Cyberspace, examined the prevalence of the phenomenon among Israeli Facebook users, and the emotional-social factors predicting the phenomenon of social media exhaustion.

The numbers are disturbing.

294 Facebook users in Israel participated in the study.

The study findings show that 34 percent of users experience fatigue as a result of using Facebook at a level they have defined as high or very high.

19 percent of users reported that using Facebook makes them feel tense and nervous, 42 percent reported that it has happened in the past that they felt they needed a break from Facebook.

31 percent said using Facebook consumes too much mental energy, 39 percent feel exhausted if they are on Facebook for a long time non-stop, and 35 percent reported feeling exhausted if they get into a long argument on Facebook.

Additional data in the study are related to the frequency of Facebook use, and are particularly troubling and to some extent explain the fatigue in question.

51 percent of study participants reported that they surf Facebook for more than an hour a day, 64 percent admitted that they log on to Facebook during a class or work session, 40 percent reported that they log on to Facebook when sitting for dinner or lunch with family or spouse, 52 percent When they hang out with friends, 84 percent of participants report that they check Facebook before they go to bed, and 70 percent check what’s new on Facebook as soon as they wake up.

Who is at risk for Facebook fatigue?

"Analysis of the study's findings revealed that the more people feel insecure about interpersonal relationships, the higher levels of Facebook fatigue they experience," explained Dr. Alfasi.

The reasons for this are that people with interpersonal difficulties and low and unstable self-esteem are more likely to engage in social comparison on social networks and feel more FOMO as a result of use, which increases the physical and mental exhaustion involved in using social networks in general, and Facebook in particular.
