Bathroom cleaners should be particularly effective against typical dirt in the bathroom. But in the test, many only seem mediocre, a branded product fails.

Spray on, wipe off - done!

In TV commercials, bathroom cleaners seem to be able to work wonders.

But in reality it often looks very different.

In its July issue, Ökotest examined 20 non-chlorine bathroom cleaners and tested them for both cleaning and environmental compatibility.

Among them were well-known brands as well as own brands of supermarkets and discounters.

18 liquid products in spray bottles

and

two in powder form or as a tab

were tested

The result is sobering.

Bathroom cleaners at Ökotest: Often aggressive acids

Bathroom cleaners differ from all-purpose cleaners primarily in their acidity.

The acids, together with surfactants, should get to the bottom of the typical dirt residues in the bathroom, such as limescale and soap residue.

About half of the manufacturers use citric, malic or lactic acid, which according to Ökotest is a good choice.

However, some also use

formic acid – too aggressive

, say the testers.

According to the Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (IFA) of the German Statutory Accident Insurance, even in diluted form it irritates the respiratory tract,” says the report on

oekotest.de.

The annoying thing about it:

Manufacturers do not have to indicate on the packaging which acid they use.

Yet

no matter what acid is in the cleaning agent

:

bathroom cleaners should only be used with the window open and the spray should not be inhaled if possible.

According to the advice of the experts, asthmatics should rather use cleaning agents without a spray function.

Incidentally, you should never mix cleaning agents - certain combinations can produce toxic chlorine gas.

Test result: Many only mediocre, two products fail when it comes to removing limescale

Overall, the test result was rather mediocre.

After all, the testers could only find a few problematic substances.

However, no cleaner in the test achieved a “very good”.

13 bathroom cleaners were rated "good"

, 6 only "satisfactory".

An ecological bathroom cleaner came last: The "Eco2pur bathroom & toilet cleaner lavender" in tab form only scored "sufficient" - in the practical test, the ecological cleaning agent rattled through when it came to removing limescale.

Just like

"Master Proper Bathroom Cleaner Freshness"

,

which did not get more than "inadequate"

in the lime-dissolving power category

.

The

test winners

with the test result “good” include:

  • Ajax Bath Spray

  • "Alma Win Fresh Mint Bathroom Cleaner Concentrate"

  • "DM Denk with bathroom cleaner fresh fragrance"

  • "Fit Bathroom Cleaner Fresh Fragrance"

  • "Ecover Essential Bathroom Cleaner Eucalyptus"

You don't have to use conventional bathroom cleaners to keep your bathroom sparkling clean.

Natural home remedies have also proven their worth in the fight against dirt, limescale and grease.

For example, vinegar essence ensures a shiny shower stall and baking soda cleans the drain.
