A 20-year-old woman has been shot dead in New York while pushing a three-month-old baby in a stroller.
The incident happened on Wednesday evening (local time) on Manhattan's Upper East Side, police said.
The perpetrator - a man in a black hoodie - fired a single shot and then fled.
The woman was declared dead a little later in a hospital, it said, the baby was unharmed.
The police have started the investigation, but nothing is known about the background to the crime.
Some US media reported that the dead woman was the mother of the child.
The police initially did not comment on the identity of the victim.
According to reports, the perpetrator shot the woman in the back of the head.
"We lost a 20-year-old woman on the Upper East Side tonight," Mayor Eric Adams wrote on Twitter.
"More guns in our city means more lives lost."
Adams was apparently referring to a decision by the Supreme Court, which ruled a week ago in a momentous landmark judgment that the concealed carrying of weapons is permitted nationwide in the United States.
