The number of people employed fell, 49 thousand fewer in May

Istat reports that in May there is a decrease of 49 thousand employed compared to April (-0.2%) concerning both genders, and in particular for permanent employees (-96 thousand) and people aged 25 and 49 years old. Unemployment drops to 8.1%, the more inactive. Among young people, the rate drops to 20.5% (ANSA)

The

compared to April (-0.2%) concerns both genders, and in particular for permanent employees (-96,000) and people between 25 and 49 years of age.

Istat reports this.

"After the strong growth recorded between February and March and the substantial stability in April, in May 2022 the number of employees fell below 23 million, due to the decrease in permanent employees".

Employment rises for the self-employed (+33 thousand), temporary employees, the under-25s and the over-50s.

Employees in May 2022 are still 463 thousand higher than in 2021 (+ 2.1%)

In the fifth month of the year, the number of employed and unemployed decreases and the number

of inactive ones increases

.

The

unemployment rate thus falls to 8.1%

overall (-0.1 points) and to 20.5% among young people (-2.1 points), according to Istat data.

The employment rate also dropped to 59.8% (-0.1 points).

The increase in inactive people (+ 0.4%, + 48 thousand units) mainly involves men and 25-34 year-olds.

The inactivity rate rises to 34.8%

(+0.2 points).

In comparison with May 2021, the employment rate rises by 1.8 percentage points, the unemployment rate falls by 1.7 points and that of inactivity by 0.7.
