The wave of fires in Italy in 2021 burned "triple the hectares of 2020", affecting above all the South: the region most affected was Sicily, while in Sardinia there was the largest fire.

This was stated by Ispra (Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research headed by the Ministry of Ecological Transition) specifying that in the last twenty years, 40-50% of the territory affected by fire is made up of forests.

Since 1/3 of the national territory is covered by forests (about 8.5 million hectares), in 2021 an area equal to 0.5% (as much as Lake Garda) was burned.
