I am leaving in the middle of the lake this morning: a girl was born aboard the ferry between Intra and Laveno, between the Piedmontese and Lombard shores of Lake Maggiore.
Having felt the first symptoms of childbirth, the parents - mother Elisa and father Sandro - boarded the 5.00 ferry in Intra, a fraction of Verbania, to reach the hospital in Cittiglio, a few kilometers from Laveno.
Once offshore, the engineer Alessandro Rossi heard the cries for help from his future father.
The wife was in the car and had already broken water.
The engineer was promptly activated by retrieving clean sheets, and in a few minutes the little girl was born.
In the meantime, the commander Marco Rossi had alerted the rescuers who awaited the arrival of the ferry in Laveno and in an ambulance they immediately accompanied the mother and child, both in good condition, to the Cittiglio hospital for first treatment.
This was announced by Navigazione Lago Maggiore, which expressed "heartfelt congratulations on the birth of Caterina Sofia" and "thanks the crew of the motor ship and in particular the engineer for the timely intervention, which made it possible to contribute to the happy event".
