Video of a court hearing has caused an uproar in Brazil.

The clip, published by The Intercept Brazil, shows the 10-year-old rape victim being questioned by a judge.

She asks the child, "Would you like to name the baby?" and "Can you stay pregnant a little longer?".

The Washington Post reports on this.

The prosecutor seconded the judge and asked the child if she could imagine adopting the baby instead of letting her die an agonizing death.

Finally, the judge rules that the child must be removed from his family and placed in an institution to protect the fetus.

The case sparked emotional discussions in Brazil.

300,000 women signed a petition calling for the judge's removal from office.

But President Bolsonaro wrote on Twitter: "It is inadmissible to take the life of this defenseless creature!".

Abortion laws in Brazil are very strict.

Abortions are only allowed in cases of rape or incest, and severe deformities of the fetus.

However, people who campaign for the right to an abortion report that the judiciary and hospitals repeatedly try to prevent abortion, contrary to legal requirements.

According to official figures, 17,000 girls between the ages of 10 and 14 become pregnant every year.

The 10-year-old child in the video was removed from her family for 40 days.

Finally, the abortion was performed after the Brazilian federal prosecutor's office ordered the responsible hospital to do so.
