Uzbekistan ignites due to a wave of protests in the west of the country.
Uzbek President
Shavkat Mirziyoyev
announced casualties among civilians and law enforcement personnel during protests in the autonomous region of Karakalpakstan, where massive unrest occurred in reaction to a constitutional reform.
"Unfortunately, there are
casualties among civilians and law enforcement officers
," Mirziyoyev said on Sunday during a speech in Karakalpakstan that was broadcast by his press service on Telegram.
Uzbekistan yesterday enacted a month-long
state of emergency
in the western region, where a major outcry erupted on Friday over proposed constitutional changes that would weaken the region's status.
Since then Mirziyoyev has pledged to withdraw the amendments affecting the region from the constitutional reform that is expected to be submitted to a referendum in the coming months.
