For the Maldives, adapting to climate change is an emergency.
Threatened by the rising waters, the archipelago in the Indian Ocean received, on June 25, the authorization to set up a lasting solution: to create a floating city.
Located 15 minutes by boat from the country's capital, Malé, "Maldives Floating City" will consist of several floating modules that will rise at the same rate as the sea level. It will have schools, businesses, restaurants or more stores, as well as 5,000 homes.
The work must be finished within five years, but the first inhabitants will be able to move in as early as 2024.

The configuration of the Maldives makes it one of the most vulnerable countries to rising waters.
The archipelago is made up of 1,200 islands, most located less than one meter above sea level.
Faced with rising waters, 80% of the territory could be submerged by 2050. Bangladesh, Vietnam, Egypt and even the Philippines are also threatened.
