Cinemas in the US have finally left the pandemic mode behind.

First the sensational success of the Tom Cruise aviator film "Top Gun: Maverick" with box office earnings beyond the billion dollar mark - now probably another record through the animated comedy sequel "Minions - In Search of the Mini Boss".

The film has already grossed $108 million.

According to its estimates, the industry journal "Variety" assumes that it will have turned over almost 128 million dollars on Monday evening.

Then he would be the new record holder for the prestigious 4th of July weekend of the American national holiday.

The success of cinemas in the USA is not limited to just one film.

An extremely strong top five is currently running with »Maverick«, »Elvis«, »Jurassic World: Dominion« and the thriller »Black Phone«.

Analysts who regularly feel the pulse of US cinema, above all, this range strengthens their optimism that the dark times of the pandemic are over and the cinemas, so often declared dead, are awakening to new life.

Cinema makers in Germany should once again look enviously in the direction of Hollywood, because business in this country is far from going smoothly again.

And in view of the increasing corona numbers, the beginning of the summer holidays and a football World Cup in the middle of the best cinema time in autumn, the optimism in the industry should continue to dampen.

The malaise of the »Minions« can be understood quite impressively: The first film about the little yellow creatures from the »I – Simply Despicable Me« films had 935,000 viewers on its opening weekend in the summer of 2015.

The sequel saw only half, exactly 450,000 viewers.

Previously, "Top Gun: Maverick" and "Jurassic World: Dominion" had not been able to ignite at the German box office.
