(ANSA) - ROME, 04 JUL - The Corinth Canal in Greece is again open to navigation.
This was announced today in Athens by a spokesman for the Greek government, according to reports from the Dpa.
The 6.3-kilometer-long canal was closed after a collapse on January 15, 2021. However, the works are not completely finished and the authorities have therefore only granted a three-month opening for the high tourist season.
Navigating this canal is also a tourist attraction, considering the cliff walls that rise up to 85 meters above sea level.
Inaugurated at the end of the 19th century, the Corinth Canal, which is 80 kilometers from Athens, is regularly closed to navigation, especially in winter, due to landslides.
It allows boats to pass directly from the Saronic Gulf, in the Aegean Sea, to that of Corinth and then to the Ionian Sea in the west, preventing them from going around the Peloponnese.
It is only accessible to boats with a width of less than 17 meters.
Modern cruise ships are therefore not authorized for transit.
