Many mothers are eagerly awaiting the day when their baby will settle down.

From that moment on he will look to them more childish and more independent and it seems that a new world of possibilities is opening up before him.

Since babies have a different rate of development, quite a few mothers wonder what is the "right" time to sit and what to do if the baby does not show that he is on the way to independent and stable settlement.

Dorit Ben Meir

, a developmental counselor in the movement, wants to share with you some important points regarding the settlement and motor development of the baby: the first of which is the expectation.

We expect a baby to reach independent sitting on its own around the age of 7-9 months.

A baby who has not yet sat down independently is probably not due to this and it is possible that his muscles are not yet strong enough or that he does not feel confident enough to separate organs.

Independent settlement usually develops from six to crawling, so it is important not to seat the baby before he is ready for it, so that he does not skip the crawling process.

Although some claim that from the age of 9 months the baby can be seated for short periods of time to practice the abdominal muscles (which will encourage independent sitting later), it is very important to know that in such a case your baby will have a hard time getting out of this situation over time.

The result that may be obtained is a baby sitting, even upright, but will not know how to progress from sitting to another position.

You will see, for example, a baby trying to move forward with the buttocks forward or in a sort of pelvic jump.

So how can you help your baby become independent and sit on his own?

First, perform upper body rotations.

You can give the baby a side toy so that the body rotates and separates movement, for example when lying on its stomach.

Lift a toy up and from the side so that it reaches out to it so that half of its body is in the air.

At the same time, encourage standing on 6 and rocking the body back and forth and crawling.

When the baby knows how to move weight back and forth to the sides even when he is standing at 6, or when he is leaning on his elbow sideways - he will be ready to sit.

Proper settlement will be carried out gradually, through the side.

When should you seek professional advice?

If the baby is not sitting independently towards the age of one year and is unable to reach the next stages of development, it is time to seek professional advice to locate the problem and learn how to help the baby develop motor skills properly.

The Jama app was established with the aim of addressing mothers of babies from birth to age three, and centralizing for them content, activities, tips from experts and videos that will accompany them throughout this challenging period.

All the content in the app "grows" together with the baby and is precisely adapted to its developmental stages, so that the mothers receive only what is relevant to them and interests them at any given moment.

The Jama app is the place for mothers in Israel to meet and get to know other mothers around them, and create new and exciting friendships in the fascinating journey.
