The hedgehog is considered a particularly protected species in Germany. But on eBay classifieds, a brazen seller is asking 20 euros for a wild animal.

Nuremberg (Bavaria) – Anyone who has looked around on the eBay classifieds portal knows that there is (almost) nothing there that you cannot buy.

But an offer to sell from a hedgehog is not only unusual, it is also punishable.

An animal rights activist from Nuremberg thinks the same thing, and then turns on the police.

Hedgehogs on eBay classifieds – the seller wanted 20 euros

Simply took it away and offered it for sale on eBay classifieds: Cindy Kronfeldt, a friend of hedgehogs, cannot understand what a man from Nuremberg was thinking about this campaign.

"Impossible, what there is for people," she explains to "Bild".

When the association “Welt der Hedgehogs eV” appealed to an internal emergency group, she immediately declared her willingness to help and reported the provider of the suspicious advertisement.

In Germany, hedgehogs are a specially protected animal species that may not be sold, given away or locked up in the home without a legitimate reason.

The officers from the Nuremberg West Police Station drive to the seller's apartment and uncover the illegal trade in the wild animal.

They secure the hedgehog, which Cindy eventually takes into her care.

A name for the little hedgehog man is quickly found: from now on, the wild animal "listens" to the name "Alfons".

After a thorough health check, it is clear: Alfons is underweight and has a few uninvited guests on his spiked dress.

Before a new home is found, Cindy lovingly nurses her protégé in her basement.

As does animal rescuer Hollie Warren, who finds a "mysterious animal" that looks like an avocado.

Hedgehogs on eBay Classifieds - Alfons is moving into his new home

Then the time has finally come: Alfons is about to move to an allotment garden in Nuremberg.

There the hedgehog can enjoy his newly won freedom in a cozy outdoor enclosure and explore the new surroundings over the next few weeks.

"Then the bars come off and he can go looking for a wife in peace for the first time," says Cindy.

However, if Alfons is homesick or hungry in between, he can always come back to his hedgehog apartment in the garden - because his little house stays in the garden.

Goodbye Alfonso!

  • It is also forbidden to take possession or custody of animals (and plants) of specially protected species.

The law permits exceptions in Section 43.

  • Deviating from the prohibitions of § 42, it is permissible to take in injured, helpless or sick animals in order to nurse them back to health.

The animals are to be released immediately into the wild as soon as they can survive there independently.

In addition, the provisions of the Animal Welfare Act according to Section 2 must be observed.

Anyone who finds a hedgehog in need of help or a suspicious advertisement on the Internet can contact the local nature conservation authority, the police or the hedgehog help "Welt der Igel eV".
