Istat, household income rises but purchasing power decreases

In the first quarter of 2022, household disposable income increased by 2.6% compared to the previous quarter.

However, due to the generalized increase in prices, the purchasing power of households only increased by + 0.3% compared to the previous quarter.

an increase of 1.1 percentage points compared to the previous quarter, against a weaker growth in final consumption expenditure than that of disposable income (+1, 4% and + 2.6% respectively).

This is what emerges from the data released by Istat. 

"The slowdown in the growth of purchasing power is only the first step towards its inevitable fall. The now skyrocketing inflation will have the consequence of bringing purchasing power into negative territory, while consumption will formally hold up for a few more. quarter, inflated by the increase in prices ":

Massimiliano Dona, president of the National Consumers Union, stated in a note,

commenting on the data released by Istat today.

"This is why the Government must do more. The 200 euro bonus is insufficient to reverse this trend", concludes Dona.

In the first quarter of 2022, the indebtedness of public administrations to GDP fell markedly in trend terms due to the substantial increase in revenues, which more than offset the increase in expenditure.

According to Istat,

the tax burden stood at 38.4% of GDP, an increase of 0.5 percentage points compared to the first quarter of 2021.

Overall, in the first quarter of 2022,

the public administrations recorded debt net equal to -9.0% of GDP, an improvement compared to -12.8% in the corresponding period of 2021.
