Armed men launched an attack on Bourasso, a town located near Dédougou, the capital of the province of Kossi, region of Boucle du Mouhoun, in Burkina Faso.
The still provisional death toll provided by the regional administration is 22 dead and an unspecified number of injured, while local sources, contacted by Aid to the Church in Need, report over 30 deaths.
The governor, in a statement, spoke of a "terrorist threat".
The episode took place in the night between 3 and 4 July.
Among the victims, many Christians but also faithful of traditional African religions.
