An explosion damaged the Left Party office and several shops in Oberhausen.
According to the police in Essen, it was initially completely unclear what triggered the explosion on Tuesday night in the area of Friedensplatz and where exactly it occurred.
A police spokeswoman said the situation was very confusing because of numerous broken shop windows and window panes.
"We're investigating in all directions," the spokeswoman said.
A hairdressing salon and a travel agency opposite the party office are also affected.
The office is also a left center.
The left in North Rhine-Westphalia spoke of a "bomb attack", and the local radio station "Radio Oberhausen" also spread this news without naming a source.
The Essen police, who had taken over the case from the Oberhausen Presidium in the morning, were initially unable to confirm this.
