In Italy, the road towards the adoption of digital payments is increasingly marked: today "only" one in three Italians (32%) mainly uses cash and, within four years, 70% of consumers believe that "payments they will be mostly digital ".

However, there is still a large majority of people (60%) who "are not yet ready to completely abandon cash and always carry some emergency money with them", especially among Baby Boomers (born between 1946 and 1968), but also among the very young of Generation Z (under 25).

This is the photograph that emerges from the Visa Observatory, created together with Ipsos on a population sample made up of nearly 1,800 individuals, aged between 18 and 64 years.

The main advantages of card payments,

smartphones or even wearable devices are above all comfort (62% of respondents), speed (57%) and ease of use (47%), in addition to the fact that they allow you to keep track of your payments and give you the possibility to pay always and everywhere.

However, there are also limits perceived by Italians, which mainly concern the fear of fraud or card cloning and the excessive request for personal information: perceptions more widespread among the older generations, but also present in young people (over 40%) .

"Today Italy is a lively country in terms of payment instruments. We must take into account not only the expectations towards an increasingly digitalized world but also the concerns expressed by users in terms of security",

commented Visa Italia's country manager, Stefano Stoppani.

New trends are emerging across generations.

On the financial front, open banking emerges first (banking system in which financial information is shared with the customer's consent between banks and with external companies), known by 54% of the interviewees, but still partially: "only 6% degli has already given consent to the sharing of their data to obtain personalized services ".

Then there is the 'Buy Now Pay Later', considered a form of installment payment as it allows the consumer to make purchases and pay for them at a future date: it is known by 55% of respondents and 13% have already used it.

Knowledge of cryptocurrencies is also widespread: 10% of respondents own them while 57% know them.

60% of holders believe they are a "new" investment diversification opportunity and 43% believe they will find their way into an alternative payment method.

However, there is also widespread awareness that these are risky instruments, which can lose their value quickly (40%).

A very dynamic area that can grow further, according to the survey, is that of mobility.

31% of the Italians interviewed use mobility services at least once a week, such as public transport, paid parking, sharing mobility services.

Among them "there seems to be a lot of interest in being able to use a single travel payment app".

Then there is a focus on sustainability:
