This outbreak ended fatally: an apparently escaped kangaroo was shot on Autobahn 44 in North Rhine-Westphalia.
The Düsseldorf police said there was a significant risk of an accident.
A witness saw a white kangaroo at the Mönchengladbach-Odenkirchen motorway exit early Wednesday morning.
A little later, an emergency team spotted the animal in the green area at the edge of the road just before the Holz motorway junction.
According to the police, the kangaroo "didn't want to be caught at all" and hopped off the A44 into a nearby wooded area.
Since it could not be ruled out that the kangaroo would jump back onto the road, a hunter who killed it was notified.
A tranquilizer gun was not immediately available, reports the dpa news agency.
Accordingly, the animal had escaped from a private enclosure.
