An explosion destroyed the headmaster's office and the staff room of a school in the Finkenwerder district of Hamburg on Wednesday night and subsequently triggered a major fire.
The police and fire department suspect a gas explosion in the basement of the building to be the cause, as they announced on Wednesday morning.
There was nobody in the school that night.
The caretaker, who lives in the outbuilding according to NDR, was also unharmed.
The fire started in the basement of the district school and spread from there to the administration building, which also houses the staff room.
60 emergency services were on site during the night and were able to contain the fire to a few embers in the morning.
Classes are canceled this Wednesday.
It would have been the last day of school before summer vacation.
The freshly printed certificates, which according to NDR were stored in the school management office, could not have been handed over anyway.
