Traffic accidents are one of the most common causes of death worldwide - especially among young people.

That should change, a new EU regulation now prescribes driving assistants in new cars.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), traffic accidents in Brussels are the leading cause of death among young people between the ages of five and 29.

According to the Federal Statistical Office, there were 2.3 million registered traffic accidents in Germany in 2021 alone.

In order to reduce the number of accidents, the European Union is planning intelligent assistance systems in new cars - including an automatic speed brake.

European regulation: From when the automatic speed brake applies

The number of fatalities and serious injuries in road traffic has been falling sharply for years.

The Federal Statistical Office gives the reasons for this as legal regulations, road construction measures, but also improved vehicle technology.

The mandatory introduction of intelligent assistance systems is intended to further increase safety on Germany's roads.

Many of the systems, such as the reversing assistant, are already standard in new cars.

According to the EU regulation, the intelligent driver assistance systems are mandatory for all newly designed vehicle types from

July 6, 2022,

i.e. for all models produced for the first time.

From

July 7, 2024

, the regulation will also apply to all other new cars from model series that are already on the market.

European regulation: These driver assistance systems are mandatory with immediate effect

  • Intelligent

Speed Assistance (ISA) warns the driver if he is exceeding the speed limit

    .

The gas pedal "vibrates" and a display appears in the cockpit.

For safety reasons, the driver can override the system and still drive faster, which can be relevant when overtaking, for example.

The assistant can recognize traffic signs, but also receives GPS data from navigation systems.

The system is automatically active, but can be deactivated.

  • The

    emergency brake

assistant automatically brakes the vehicle in dangerous situations.

A collision should be prevented or at least less serious.

To do this, the assistant uses data from the control unit, radar and camera systems.

Lidar is also used, which is a type of three-dimensional laser scanning of the vehicle's surroundings.

The system is automatically activated when the car is restarted, but can be deactivated.

According to the EU, the emergency brake assistant must first be able to recognize obstacles and other moving vehicles, and at a later point in time also pedestrians and cyclists.

Exactly when is not yet certain.

  • The

    result-related data recording (black box)

stores data in the seconds before and after an accident - anonymously and in a closed system.

The information is used, for example, by authorities for accident research.

Although the black box measures data such as the vehicle's position and inclination on the road, speed and activation of the safety systems, the insurance company does not have access to it, according to EU information.

    Data logging cannot be disabled.

  • The

    emergency

lane keeping assistant (ELK - Emergency Lane Keeping) warns the vehicle driver if the vehicle unintentionally leaves the lane and intervenes itself.

The system can countersteer itself if there is a dangerous situation - if the car threatens to drive into oncoming traffic.

This system should therefore not be confused with the well-known lane departure warning system, which only warns the driver.

The system is automatically activated when the car is restarted, but can be deactivated.

  • Other intelligent assistance systems include the

    emergency brake light

    , the

    drowsiness warning

    system , a

    reversing

    assistant and a

    seat belt warning system

    .

    A standardized

interface for retrofitting an alcohol-sensitive immobilizer

    is also planned.

The EU has not yet specified when exactly such a control device will become mandatory.

A speed limit on autobahns splits minds in Germany.

Many a driver may also feel "patronised" by the automatic speed brake.

But the driver always has the last word, which is important for safety reasons alone - for example when overtaking.

The assistance systems only provide support, the responsibility always remains with the driver himself.

Sometimes drivers simply overlook the applicable speed limit and unintentionally drive too fast.

In such cases, the intelligent speed assistant also serves as a "flash insurance", so fewer fines should flutter into the house.

Resistance to new rules for cars is almost a tradition in Germany, just remember the protests against seat belts in the 1970s.

According to the EU Commission, intelligent assistants can prevent around 25,000 road deaths and 140,000 serious injuries by 2038, because around 90 percent of all road accidents are caused by human error.
