A photograph of a baby girl on a plane, wearing an adult face mask with holes cut in her eyes, sparked a heated debate on the net.

Since it was published, the picture has gone viral and while there are many praising the mother for trying to protect her baby from the corona virus, others have claimed that it is child abuse.

However, Andre Opperman, the photographer who took this photo, on an Air New Zealand flight from Auckland to Wellington on July 1, said it was a "super-sweet interaction" and there was nothing sinister about it.

"The baby was full of joy, bouncing for fun and giggling. It made the wait to get off the plane a little more entertaining," he said.

"Do not be one of the types who complains about a photo on Facebook"

But as mentioned, there were quite a few commenters on the net who were outraged at the situation documented in the photo.

One of them wrote: "If I had seen it on the flight, I would have removed the mask from it myself."

Others claimed the photo was "so sad" and claimed that "it is dangerous to cover her airways that way".

Opperman, who since posting the photo has made his Instagram account private, defended the mother, claiming the mask was not tight around the baby's face.

"I think it was a combination of doing something funny and also trying her best to protect her child, with the means at her disposal," he told the New Zealand Herald.

Many respondents agreed with the photographer.

One of them noted that "the baby waved her fist to signal that she has enough air and ventilation in the mask to breathe properly, and do not be one of the types complaining about a picture on Facebook."

Another respondent wrote that "the baby is already training to be a superhero. The world is not ready for a super-baby yet."

And of course,

All passengers over the age of 12 in the country must wear masks on domestic flights.

So who's right?

The Daily Mail reports that in New Zealand all passengers over the age of 12 must wear face masks on domestic flights.

As for younger children who wear a mask - parents are advised to choose a mask that suits them well and is comfortable to wear.

It should cover the child's nose, mouth and chin with no spaces above, below or on the sides.

Dr. Amanda Kwellswig, an epidemiologist at the University of Otago Wellington, said that in order for them to do their job properly, the masks must be well adjusted so that air does not penetrate from the sides. It is found on small faces, "said the researcher. On the other hand, a microbiologist who was interviewed for the same article said that the mask wearing the baby that appears in the photograph" may slightly reduce the amount of viruses he breathes in.

But apparently, it's best to invest in masks for the little ones. "
