Avia, Greece: Relax like a Greek and pay like a Greek

Short flight, sane prices, nice people, spectacular views, delicious food, and most importantly - peace and quiet.

Avia is the perfect Greek island for a summer vacation, and it is also really inexpensive.

So how is it that no one knows him?

Avia Island, Greece (Photo: Yifat Sani)

Health sections sometimes publish lists of the places where the happiest and healthiest people in the world live.

Well, we have no official proof of that, but it seems that the Greek island of Evia (Evia or Euboea) should be at the top of any such list.

In Avia, the second largest island in Greece (the first is Crete if you were wondering), severe fires broke out just a year ago, and the place seemed lost, but its natural beauty and tranquility managed to recover, as did its residents who welcome every tourist who comes to the area.

Avia offers a different kind of vacation for tourists who want peace, good (very) food and spectacular views.

There are not many Israelis there and you will not find parties or celebs there, but if you are looking for a place that will allow you to relax and get back to routine with fuller batteries - this is your place.

Mountainous, green and very Greek (in a good section).

The island that does not require sailing

The trip to Evia is very diverse, as its central part is green and mountainous, very Greek and consists of lots of small and picturesque villages, and in the other part of the island there are spectacular beaches, some very quiet and some more touristy and well equipped - so you can enjoy all the possibilities.

You can spend two days in a luxurious resort town, then on a short ferry ride to reach one of the small islands of Avia, and be suddenly on a different kind of Greek vacation.

In other words, it is the perfect package - both hiking and nature, as well as quiet islands and blue sea.

By the way, unlike other threats in Greece, it is very easy to reach Avia - the island does not require sailing, since it is connected to the mainland by a bridge.

But yes it is advisable to rent a car so that you can switch between several destinations within the island (some will require a short cruise).

Here are some goals that you really should not miss.

Just an hour from Athens: Halkida

Nightlife, attractions and restaurants on the sea.

Halkida (Photo: Walla !, Yifat Sani)

The oldest synagogue in Europe still active

The city of Chalkida - the capital of Avia - is only an hour's drive from Athens - you can drive there (thanks to the bridge in question), and if you prefer you can also get there by a 45 minute ferry from Athens.

In the city of Halkida you will find nightlife, attractions, water sports and museums, along with plenty of restaurants facing the sea.

Apart from the classic pastimes in this Greek city, in the plot you will also find an ancient Jewish synagogue, in fact the oldest synagogue in Europe that is still active.

And members of the local Jewish community will be happy to host you in a building that carries many years of history, ancient books and exciting stories.

Plenty of quiet, non-mass hotels.

Cosmetics from grapes

Another gem not to be missed in its parts is the Avantisestate winery, which is a short drive from the city.

There are quite a few wineries in Greece in general, and in Avia in particular, but Aventis offers an extraordinary experience.

First, their wine is exceptionally good (wins international awards), the place is terribly beautiful and offers pampering wine tastings, and if that's not enough - the winery also has a treatment room that offers grape-based cosmetics.

Any visitor to the winery can enjoy a short 10-minute treatment to experience the products, and if you are interested in continuing this pleasure, you can pay for a longer facial.

A perfect way after a wine tasting.

In the plot you will find a lot of hotels that cater to tourists, all of them are not too crowded or noisy.

And if you want to feel at home, the Israeli hotel chain Brown has opened a new and luxurious hotel in the city last week, offering a private beach, a large pool and well-equipped rooms.

Arteria: The place where Greeks spend their vacations

To rest like the Greeks.

Relax not like a tourist

As mentioned, Avia is a very large island, so it has lots of towns, islands and villages that you can enjoy, but if you want a large and luxurious hotel that you do not really need to move from - Erteria is the place for you.

While this is a fairly small beach town, how since it is an ancient city with important archeological sites, and also because it is a very beautiful place - it is the only place in Avia that has huge hotels.

In fact, it is the most touristy part of Avia, and has about 5,000 guest rooms, most of which are completely empty of Israelis.

Another great advantage of arteria is its location.

It is only an hour away from the airport in Athens (and cheaper), and in a location that will allow you to organize tours from the hotel to many places.

40 minutes drive you can be on the mountain of Avia, and 40 minutes away in the other direction you will find yourself bathing in the Aegean Sea.

All these advantages make Arteria a favorite holiday destination for the Greeks, and if you ask the business owners there this is what sets them apart - a place where you can relax like a Greek and pay like a Greek (and not like a tourist).

All you want is to sit down with a glass of wine and take a deep breath.

Restaurants on the beach of Limani (Photo: Walla !, Yifat Sani)

To my right: The most beautiful coastal town in Avia (and the secret of some Israelis)

Limeni is a small and beautiful town, worth spending at least one day on each light trip.

Limney, which looks like the Greek version of Amalfi, offers a variety of attractions, such as water sports, but the truth is that its charm stems from its peace and quiet, and probably when you get there all you want to do is sit in one of the beachside restaurants with a glass of wine and take a deep breath.

In Limani there are several small and charming hotels, including one that turns out to be the best kept secret of quite a few Israelis.

The To Rodi Hotel has only 9 rooms, and almost all the guests there are Israelis, who come again and again for long vacations, and swear that it is the perfect destination for an escape from reality.

There are also Israelis who invest in real estate in the area, but this is also the subject of another article.

The Greek version of Amalfi.

And another word about Limani: The food wherever you stop at Avia is especially delicious, but Limani has traditional and especially delicious food.

For example, in the cute coffee Yanros on the shoreline you will find classic Greek sweets, the highlight being galactoborico - a large pastry of filo dough and vanilla cream, which you must not miss, and the orange cake you will find everywhere on the island, and it is simply a delight.

Health is nice and everything, but if you are already here do not miss the locomotive.

Oedipus: For your health

From Limani it is very worthwhile to continue to Edipsos, if only for the hot springs that are right on its beach.

Oedipus is a sweet seaside town, with only 5,000 inhabitants, but it has become a destination that attracts a lot of tourists from Europe because of its hot springs.

In the town, which is health-oriented, you will also find spa and wellness hotels that will offer treatments with all the natural minerals that characterize the place, and like everywhere else in Greece - also excellent restaurants, taverns and beaches where you can spend hours.

And if you're in the Oedipus, do not miss the traditional Dimitriou bakery, which has been preparing exceptional Greek delicacies for four generations.

Apart from fresh Greek-style pasta, almond cookies and orange cakes, you will also find in the bakery the most delicious locomotive scent you have ever eaten, and also bugatza - a Greek pastry of filo leaves filled with vanilla cream and wrapped in powdered sugar, which is a reason to go all the way.

Beaches where you can spend hours.

And another little tip - if you have a few days in Ephesus, and you listened to our first advice and rented a car, we recommend driving 40 minutes and also visiting Pefki - where you will find a 4 km boulevard along the beach, full of cafes, taverns, traditional restaurants. Pepki is the most visited area in northern Avia, after the Oedipus, but has fewer hotels and more apartments for rent.

All the best in Greece on one small island.

Skyros (Photo: Walla !, Yifat Sani)

Scyros: The icing on the cake

Skyros is a small and isolated island (3,000 inhabitants only) that combines all the good we reviewed in previous paragraphs in one place.

To get to Skyros you will need to take a two-hour ferry from the city of Kymi, but the trip is definitely worth it.

The northern part of Skyros is forested, and the other part is drier and rocky, like two islands on one island.

On the island you can take a boat and sail to the bay, where you can jump into the water and swim.

You can also walk to one of the island's beautiful beaches and spend hours there.

Like two islands for the price of one.

Every beach you stop at will be breathtakingly beautiful.

Skyros (Photo: Walla !, Yifat Sani)

The beaches of Skyros can not be mistaken, they are all breathtakingly beautiful, but our recommendation is the beach Agios Peter - this is a small strip of beach that houses a church, and next to it a tavern and two houses that also offer guest rooms.

It is a small, quiet and perfect beach.

Another recommended addition is Magazia, which offers a beautiful strip of freedom and one restaurant called Stefano's that is highly recommended.

Similar to them, you will find on the island other beaches where you can spend hours and days, in many of them you will also find guest rooms, if you feel like staying within the pastoral.

If you prefer a more luxurious hotel, you should try the Nefeli Hotel - a small hotel overlooking the island's cliff, offering large and beautiful rooms, a pool and delicious Greek food.

One of the symbols of the place.

The pony farm in Skyros

If you want to say goodbye to the sea and take a walk, we recommend visiting the horse farm on the island, where the breed of pony is preserved, which has become one of the symbols of the place.

skyros island horse trust was established in 2005 and since then tremendous efforts have been made to preserve the island's ponies and allow them a good life.

The couple who run the place work out of a huge love for horses, and apart from the pleasure of seeing the ponies, you really enjoyed hearing them describe the way they went through with them.

The center of Skyros is built around an ancient Byzantine fortress, which is also well worth a visit.

In the complex you will find the remains of a ninth century church and monastery, as well as the Manos and Anastasia Faltaits Museum dedicated to local culture.

This historical tour should be combined with a stroll through the alleys of the village, which will reveal to you houses that are built in a very traditional and picturesque way, small shops and lots of smiling people.
