A 760-year-old Jewish tombstone has been found in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Bavaria.
According to the inscription, it dates back to 1262 and should therefore be at least one of the oldest material testimonies to Jewish culture in Rothenburg, as the Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments announced on Thursday.
According to the inscription, the tombstone was erected by a Jacob for his daughter Channah.
The oldest written evidence of a Jewish culture in the Middle Franconian city dates back to 1180. According to Rothenburg, it was then that Jewish culture flourished.
In 1520 the Jews were completely expelled, and only 350 years later did they resettle.
