The professor of epidemiology is in favor of a return to the obligation of the mask in public transport.

When will the peak of the 7th wave of Covid-19 which is currently sweeping through France be reached?

In the columns of the JDD this Sunday, the professor of epidemiology and member of the scientific council Arnaud Fontanet recalls that "according to the models of the Pasteur Institute, we expect 1,700 new daily admissions to the hospital on the horizon of July 18, compared to around a thousand these days".

“This trajectory brings us closer to the level reached in the spring with the Omicron sub-variant, BA.2.

We could even observe a higher peak than that of April, ”he continues.

For the epidemiologist, “there will be an impact on hospitals, but first of all because they are weakened by two and a half years of health crisis and by the absenteeism induced by infections among the staff.

The risk of overloading in certain regions, linked to the travel of holidaymakers, cannot be ruled out.

However, there is no risk of saturation in the short term.

Professor Fontanet says he is in favor of a return to the obligation to wear a mask in public transport, this measure sending: “a simple and strong signal demonstrating an intense circulation of the virus.

A 7th wave driven by Omicron sub-variants

The threshold of 150,000 deaths linked to Covid-19 was crossed on Friday in France, according to figures from Public Health France.

With 74 people dead in hospital from the disease in 24 hours, the death toll has exceeded 150,000 (150,017, including more than 121,000 in hospital).

The 140,000 mark was crossed on March 11, two years after the start of the pandemic.

The seventh wave of the epidemic started at the end of May in France, pushed by subvariants of Omicron.

It is reflected in a sharp increase in contamination, while the circulation of the virus continues to intensify on the territory.

Thursday evening there were thus more than 160,000 cases, with 17,719 hospitalized patients, including 1,523 new admissions.
