Gas and electricity prices are rising, which is particularly noticeable in the wallet during the heating period.

Read here what additional costs you will have to pay in 2022.

CO₂ certificates that energy companies have to pay for the purchase of fossil fuels, through to restricted gas supplies from Russia: the fact that electricity and gas prices are currently extremely high has political reasons, among other things.

But the corona pandemic is also partly responsible.

Due to the pandemic, the gas storage facilities in Europe are not as well filled as before, as the energy company Vattenfall reports.

When demand is greater than supply, prices usually go up.

The same is currently true of energy costs.

Citizens have to be prepared for high costs.

The comparison portal Check24 has published a new analysis listing the

additional costs

for the consumer.

High energy prices are a problem for many citizens.

Price increases in 2022: consumers will therefore have to pay more for electricity and gas

For June to August, the basic electricity and gas suppliers have

announced or already implemented price increases in 695 cases

– for more than 8.3 million households.

“Once the energy suppliers procured before the crisis have been used up, they will have to buy even more at the currently expensive market prices.

If Paragraph 24 of the Energy Security Act were to be activated, suppliers could pass on higher costs resulting from a reduction in gas import volumes directly to consumers," explains Steffen Suttner, Managing Director of Check24 Comparison Portal Energie GmbH, explaining the background.

Almost 1,000 euros more for gas per year

According to the Handelsblatt, those gas consumers whose suppliers have to procure replacement Russian gas that is no longer supplied at high prices at short notice are severely affected by the price adjustment clause under Paragraph 24.

That's not a few.

Since autumn 2021, gas suppliers have increased prices or announced a price increase in more than 1,460 cases, as Check24 informs.

More than 3.3 million households are affected,

which on average have to pay almost 52 percent more for the gas supply

.

For a model household with a consumption of 20,000 kWh, this means additional costs of an average of 952 euros per year.

Electricity providers are also increasing their prices.

On average, the price increases amount to 22.6 percent and affect around 7.7 million households, according to Check24 information.

For a model household with a consumption of 5,000 kWh, this means additional costs of an average of 380 euros per year.

Citizens benefit from the decision by the Bundestag to abolish the EEG surcharge (EEG stands for the Renewable Energy Sources Act).

The decision came into force on July 1 and resulted in a price reduction of around

66 euros

for a single household with an annual electricity consumption of around 1,500 kWh .

A household that consumes around 5,000 kWh annually pays around 222 euros less, according to Check24.
