4.5 million people worked overtime last year - some of them unpaid

12 percent of all employees worked overtime last year – partly unpaid.
This is reported by the Federal Statistical Office.
Overtime is simply part of most jobs – in some cases, employees are then allowed to take time off to compensate for the hours they have worked too much.
Some get
paid for the overtime
and
others get nothing

According to a calculation by the Federal Statistical Office, around 990,000 people
in Germany received
no compensation for the overtime worked
last year
.
By the way: Your employment contract also regulates overtime, but some formulations are not permitted.

Overtime mainly in the finance and insurance sector, gastronomy with little overtime
According to the Federal Statistical Office, there are sometimes significant differences in the distribution of overtime.
In the
finance and insurance sectors
, most people worked overtime.
Around every fifth person was affected by overtime.
Just behind them are employees from the
energy supply
sector .
The fewest overtime workers worked in the
hospitality and arts and entertainment industries
.
According to the Federal Statistical Office, this is due to the corona pandemic.

Around 29 percent worked at least 15 hours of overtime during the week
Overtime is a mixed bag, with over half of people who worked overtime saying they worked less than 10 hours of overtime per week.
About a third said they worked less than five hours of overtime.
However, more than a
quarter of people put in significant overtime per week
- they reported working
at least 15 hours of overtime

Overtime: working time account, payment or unpaid
Most employees (71 percent) have the overtime credited to their working time account, which means that they can compensate for the overworked hours.
For around
22 percent, the overtime is considered unpaid
, the rest have been paid for the overworked hours.
According to the Federal Statistical Office, the data is based on the first results of the microcensus for 2021. The microcensus is the largest household survey of official statistics in Germany
