You may be surprised but even today some people think that the Middle East is a destination for desert and camel rides, and for Africa, the second largest continent in the world, as a place for a safari trip only.
But how wrong they are: in both the Middle East and Africa you can meet rich and fascinating cultures, breathtaking landscapes, colorful people and special (and delicious) food.
The popular American magazine Travel + Leisure has asked, as it does every year, its readers to comment on their travel experiences around the world - in order to share their views on the leading cities.
Readers rated the cities based on sites and landmarks, culture, food, hospitality, shopping and overall value.

The African cities on the list represent some of the continent’s most popular destinations.
The longtime favorite reader of Morocco occupies two of the first places this year: Marrakech, at the foot of the Atlas Mountains, in 5th place, and in 10th place, Paz, the second largest city in the country and a center of traditional art.
One African city entered the list for the first time - Kigali, which comes in 6th place.
The capital of Rwanda is becoming popular among travelers as an escape in the city before or after trips to the country’s many national parks, which are still the main motives of the country’s tourism economy.
Readers noted that Kigali was easy to navigate and loaded with interesting sites.
Four of the top ten places this year are in the Arabian Peninsula, including number 8 in Doha, where Qatar will host the World Cup later this year, and number 9 Abu Dhabi, the capital of the UAE.
Readers praised the latter as a "charming and super-modern city."
At the top of the list are two Israeli cities.
The first is the city that does not rest - Tel Aviv and the second is the capital Jerusalem which many tourists like to visit due to its abundance of history.

The oceanfront capital of Oman is one of the most involved cities in the Arabian Peninsula, thanks in part to its thousands of years of history as a major trading port.
Due to a national height limit on new construction, the architecture tends towards the traditional, with clear influences from the Arab, Persian, Ottoman and Indian aesthetics.
It is recommended to wander among the markets or along the Cornish, and do not miss a tour of the magnificent Sultan Kabos Mosque.
Muscat currently has a slight boom in hotels as interest grows from international travelers - note the Jumeirah Bay that will open this summer.
