Grilled sausages in the test: how good are the bratwurst from Aldi and Kaufland – and is organic really better?

Öko-Test tested 19 grilled sausages.

Only two products score "very good".

The main criticisms are mineral oil, too much salt and the way the pigs are kept.

The focus was on ingredients, taste and animal welfare.

The result is sobering.

Particularly striking: the majority of the sausages are contaminated with mineral oil components.

Bratwurst in the Öko-Test: poor animal husbandry and problems with mineral oil

If it were about the pure

and the

, ten of the 19 grilled sausages tested would do well in the Öko-Test.

But for the magazine, more than good taste counts - especially in relation to the husbandry of the pigs that are processed into sausages.

The list of the critically assessed housing conditions includes docked tails, castrated piglets, no exercise, hardly any space and many antibiotics in the fattening.

But also mineral oil

Öko-Test identifies a serious problem:

are contaminated with saturated

(MOSH/MOSH analogues) - the organic product from Packlhof even in a quantity that Öko-Test classifies as "greatly increased".

MOSH accumulate in organs such as the liver and it is not yet known how harmful this is in the long term.

Finding MOSH and MOAH is a common

. Öko-Test also found such contamination in sunflower oil, muesli and spaghetti, among other things.

In addition, unnecessary additives such as phosphates – they serve as a stabilizer and are banned in organic food – and

are criticized in the grilled sausage test.

Grilled sausages in the test: only two products received "very good" from Öko-Test

Ultimately, only

were able to convince the testers.

Two grilled sausages received the

from the organic manufacturer Alnatura and the organic brand Edeka:

• Alnatura roast sausages from Bioland (9.69 euros/500 g)

• Edeka Bio Original Thuringian bratwurst, boiled (6.24 euros/500 g)

Four other

received the

, including two discounter brands:

• Good organic Thuringian bratwurst from Aldi Nord (6.32 euros/500 g)

• K-Bio pork bratwurst from Kaufland (6.90 euros/500 g)

• Delicatessen bratwurst from Ökoland (10.98 euros/500 g)

• Weimar Thuringia Organic Thuringian Rostbratwurst (advertising link) from Diefrische Thüringer (6.24 euros/500 g)

By the way: Even vegan sausage alternatives were recently not able to convince in the Öko-Test: two-thirds of the products failed with the grade "poor" or "insufficient".
