In 2019, the vanilla ice cream variety was the winner at Stiftung Warentest, now the manufacturer is recalling the product.
The reason is the suspicion of pesticide contamination.
Minneapolis/Norderstedt – In 2019, Häagen-Dazs brand vanilla ice cream was still the test winner at Stiftung Warentest.
It has now become known that the popular vanilla ice cream flavor may be contaminated with ethylene oxide.
The manufacturer General Mills, together with its sales partner Genuport Trade GmbH, is therefore recalling the Häagen-Dazs varieties "Vanilla" and "Classic Collection".
However, only batches with specific best-before dates are affected.
The brand can also be found in the refrigerated shelves of Netto, Rewe, Edeka and many other supermarkets.
Recall: These best before dates and batches are affected
On average, every German eats around 100 scoops of ice cream a year - vanilla is one of the most popular flavors.
The Häagen-Dazs ice cream flavors "Vanilla" and "Classic Collection" in two different sizes, which have best-before dates up to and including May 21, 2023, are affected by the current recall.

Recall of vanilla ice cream: This is how affected consumers proceed
If you have an affected product at home, you can return it to any point of sale for a refund of the purchase price.
As a rule, the money will be returned without presenting a receipt.
If they have any further questions, customers can contact the sales partner Genuport, by e-mail to
info@genuport.de
or by telephone on 040-52841-0.
Other Häagen-Dazs ice cream flavors or best before dates are not affected by the current recall.
However, consumer advocates criticize the report from Häagen-Dazs as being too late.
The product is also available in other European countries, where the ban on sales of goods was already granted on July 8th.
The vanilla ice cream is suspected to be contaminated with the pesticide ethylene oxide.
This substance is considered carcinogenic and mutagenic.
In Europe, the use of the pesticide in the food industry is banned, but imports via third countries mean that contaminated goods such as locust bean gum (E 410) are in circulation, which in turn are used in numerous products.
The ethylene oxide contamination of numerous imports from third countries has been known since autumn 2020, and there are now around 700 reports in the European Rapid Alert System (RASFF), as reported by the NRW consumer advice center.
