A cargo plane crashed to the ground last night in northern Greece, near Paleochori Kavalas, about 140 kilometers east of Thessalonica.
The freight flight was traveling from Serbia to Jordan, and would have asked to be able to make an emergency landing at the Greek airport of Kavalas, without being able to reach it.
According to the international media - which published this morning an amateur video of the plane falling into flames and crashing to the ground, causing a huge explosion - there was a crew of at least eight people on board the plane, a four-engine Antonov An- 12 of a Ukrainian company, which transported about 11 tons of "dangerous materials", possibly explosives.
So far there is no news of any survivors.
According to local officials, the Guardian reports, seven fire engines were sent to the scene of the accident, but could not get close due to numerous explosions following the crash.
One of the city's deputy mayors told broadcaster ERT that the explosions were heard for two hours after the incident.
