American actor Peter Dinklage will star in the planned fantasy saga »The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes«.
This was announced by the Lionsgate studio on Monday on Twitter.
The film adaptation of Suzanne Collins' Panem novel is scheduled to hit theaters in November 2023.
The German title is: »The Panem Tributes – The Song of the Bird and the Snake«.
The 53-year-old Dinklage is best known for his role as Tyrion Lannister in the fantasy epic »Game of Thrones«.
The series aired from 2011 to 2019.
Dinklage received numerous awards for his work on the series, including multiple Emmys for Best Supporting Actor and a Golden Globe Award.
In the new Panem film, Dinklage will now play Dean Casca Highbottom, inventor of the Hunger Games.
Again directed by Francis Lawrence.
So far, four films have been made from the original book trilogy, which grossed around three billion dollars worldwide between 2012 and 2015.
The rough plot: Katniss Everdeen (played by Jennifer Lawrence) lives in the fictional world called Panem - and is forced by a totalitarian regime under the power-hungry leader Coriolanus Snow (Donald Sutherland) to fight youths from other districts in fighting games to the death.
Set 64 years before these events, the new dystopian sci-fi novel centers on young Snow (Tom Blyth) who mentor young District 12 fighter Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler) during the 10th Hunger Games target.
"Dean Highbottom is one of the most powerful people in Snow's life," director Lawrence said of Deadline.
'As the stern and vengeful face of the Games, he sets the rules that will determine every aspect of Coriolanus' fate.
I'm thrilled that Peter will bring it to life."
