Cause of Clover in Lawn

If clover grows excessively in the lawn, this is usually a sign that the gar roots are lacking in certain nutrients.

A lack of nitrogen is usually the cause.

While the lawn weakens under the lack of nutrients, the clover doesn't mind.

The weeds eventually prevail over the grass.

Incidentally, a lack of water can also have the same effect: dry months with little rain weaken the lawn and it quickly turns brown, while the clover can multiply wonderfully even under these harsh conditions.

Remove clover in the lawn: three home remedies that have a long-term effect

In order to drive clover out of the lawn in the long term, home remedies that strengthen lawn growth are the main help.

However, if you want to remove the weeds immediately, you have to do it by hand.

These home remedies will help:

  • Cut out clover:

If you only disturb a few spots in the lawn, you can simply cut out the clover.

However, you have to be consistent and rework regularly so that you ban the clover from the garden permanently.

Simply pulling the weeds out of the lawn is not enough - the roots would remain in the ground and the unwelcome plant would quickly grow back.

Use a weed cutter or spade instead.

Then fill the bare spots with soil and overseed new lawn.

  • Scarifying the lawn:

If the lawn is infested with clover over a large area, it usually only helps to scarify the entire lawn.

The blades of the scarifier destroy the clover while the lawn is aerated and can grow wonderfully again.

Nice side effect: When scarifying, unwanted moss is also removed from the lawn.

  • Fertilizing the lawn with nettle manure or horn shavings:

    To strengthen lawn growth and

so that the clover doesn't have a chance at all, the grass plants need sufficient nutrients.

    The garden tips

    portal

recommends nettle manure, which contains a lot of nitrogen and can therefore compensate for a deficiency.

But horn shavings, with their high nitrogen content, can also get the lawn to sprout vigorously again.

Preventing clover in the lawn: this way weeds don't stand a chance

To prevent the clover from spreading to your lawn in the first place, please do not mow the lawn too often.

If the weeds get too much light, clover grows back all the faster.

    The portal

    Moowy.de

also recommends not to mow the grass too short – a maximum of four centimeters is enough.

Otherwise, water the lawn well, fertilize regularly and scarify.

Clover has a poor chance of growing in a well-tended lawn.
