Currently, many citizens are receiving a Europol call, which is a scam.

The BKA warns of such contact attempts and explains what to do.

Den Haag/Wiesbaden - Telephone fraudsters regularly use various tricks to steal huge sums of money from unsuspecting citizens.

In the spring of 2022, more and more cases will be observed in Germany in which Europol is said to be making contact with people by phone.

However, this is a perfidious scam, warns the Federal Criminal Police Office in Wiesbaden.

The BKA draws attention to the fact that extreme caution is required when receiving a Europol call by telephone or smartphone.

The process of the contact attempt, with which many people - including younger people - are apparently confronted on the phone at the moment is as follows:

Europol call?

BKA warns of frequent scams

An unknown number calls, when the call is answered, an automated voice appears that appears to be from the European law enforcement agency.

Then it's about personal data that was allegedly stolen and you have to press the number 1 to find out more about it.

The Federal Criminal Police Office warns of the scam in which people are unsettled and asked for as much personal data as possible.

In principle, the trials would target older people because they are more gullible and more prone to such concerns.

In addition to the Europol cases, the authority warns of similar attempts in which the telephone scammers pretended to be Interpol employees.

We recently reported on a case south of Munich.

The BKA explains that no police authority itself would attempt to persuade people to transfer money over the phone:

The scam exists in different versions, by phone or via WhatsApp.

The attempts are almost always to persuade the person called to make a transfer or hand over money in person.

In addition, according to the BKA, the fraudsters may use special procedures to display a phone number that actually belongs to Europol or local police authorities on the display of the person called.

Stern.de

also states that there are attempts at fraud that show a phone number on the display that is similar to that of the target person.

What is the best way to protect yourself if there is a Europol or Interpol call on the phone?

The first thing to do is not to answer the call.

If this happens anyway and you recognize a robot voice, you should hang up.

What not to do: engage in conversation or give out personal information.

Especially don't transfer money or hand it over personally!

A few days earlier, Europol had issued a similar warning: the European law enforcement agency had clarified the use of deepfake technology used by organized crime.

These are videos, images or audio files created with the help of artificial intelligence.

This phenomenon has even been observed in global trouble spots such as the Ukraine war.
