The
British government
has given the
green
light to the
new Sizewell C nuclear power plant
in Suffolk, eastern England, which the government says will generate
low-carbon
electricity
for six million homes
. "Today the Secretary of State for Enterprise, l 'Energy and Industrial Strategy has granted clearance to the Sizewell C project, ”the government said in a statement.
The new EPR Sizewell C nuclear power plant will have
France's EDF as its main partner
.
London has made the development of nuclear energy one of the
priorities
of its
energy strategy
, but many of its
15 reactors
are at the end of their life cycle and the only plant currently under construction,
Hinkley Point C
, a project also led by EDF and from the Chinese CGN, has seen its costs soar and will not open until 2027. In the midst of a cost of living crisis caused by the surge in energy bills and with the war in Ukraine which has brought back
energy independence
in the spotlight, the UK wants to accelerate the development of nuclear energy.
