Stiftung Warentest examined 21 children's toothpastes.

Only two of them received the rating "very good", many in particular scored "inadequate".

Berlin – In order to ensure the right protection for teeth, various factors must be taken into account when manufacturing toothpaste.

When it comes to the teeth of children who have their milk teeth, there are other points to consider.

To protect the teeth, there must first be sufficient fluoride in the product.

However, less than with toothpaste for adults, some of which Stiftung Warentest also examined.

In addition, many children swallow part of the toothpaste when brushing.

For this reason, it is important that children's toothpaste does not contain the coloring agent titanium dioxide.

This will be banned in food from August 2022 because it may damage the genetic material, as

Stiftung Warentest

writes.

The study also took this factor into account, although titanium dioxide is still permitted in toothpaste.

In the children's toothpaste test, one product from Elmex and one from Signal received the rating "very good".

Stiftung Warentest examines children's toothpaste: disappointing results

In a study, 21 toothpastes for children were considered and evaluated according to these two characteristics.

In addition, the packaging, declaration and advertising claims also played a role in the end result of the creams.

Only two of them got the rating "very good".

One made it into the “good” category.

Nine toothpastes received the ratings "fair" and these creams scored "poor":

  • Dentalux Tooth Gel for Kids (Lidl)

  • Happy Kids Strawberry Tooth Gel (Logodent Natural Cosmetics)

  • SensiDent Kids Toothpaste (Müller)

  • Alterra Naturkosmetik Children's Tooth Gel (Rossmann)

  • Children's Tooth Gel (Weleda)

  • Blendi Gel (Blend-a-med)

  • Alverde natural cosmetics children's tooth gel (dm)

  • Children Toothpaste (Karex)

  • Kids toothpaste (Lavera natural cosmetics)

The "poor" toothpastes also all have a poor rating in terms of fluoride.

This means they all do not have adequate caries prophylaxis because there is too little or no fluorite.

The pasta from blend-a-med and Müller contains titanium dioxide, all the others do not.

The assessments of packaging, declaration and advertising claims were different.

Children's toothpaste in the test: Elmex and Signal get the rating "very good"

The two test winners were the "Children's Toothpaste" from Elmex and the "Children's Toothpaste My Girlfriend Conni/Fireman Sam" from Signal.

Oral-B's "Kids Toothpaste Frozen/Cars" received a rating of "good" and took third place.

However, private label toothpaste from grocery stores such as Aldi, Edeka and Rewe and from drugstores such as Rossmann and Müller were also examined.

Eight products were rated "satisfactory" and four "poor".
