It has become a tradition: the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge publish a new portrait of the birthday child just in time for their children's birthdays.

Now it's that time again – Prince George has turned nine and his parents are sharing a new photo of the little one.

It was taken by George's mother, Catherine, during a family holiday on a UK beach in early July.

The 40-year-old is considered a passionate amateur photographer.

George was born on July 22, 2013.

A day later, his mother presented him to the public for the first time.

George is the eldest child of William and Kate and is third in line to the British throne after his grandfather Charles and father William.

The Times has calculated that it could easily be up to 2072 or even longer before Prince George is crowned – William would then have reached his 90th birthday.

For the ninth birthday of Prince George, there are some changes for the king after next.

The impending move of his family from London to Windsor, around 40 kilometers away, should mean a change of school for George – as well as for his sister Charlotte.

So far, both went to school in the London district of Battersea.

There has long been speculation as to whether the family would send George to Eton after he finished primary school – the legendary, elite school in Windsor, which Prince William also attended.

This year - the Queen's 70th jubilee - George and his siblings Charlotte and Louis attracted a lot of attention.

For example, when they drove to the parade in a carriage with Kate and Duchess Camilla and waved to the crowd.

Shortly thereafter, George, who, like his father, is said to be very enthusiastic about sports, accompanied his parents to Wimbledon, to the final of the tennis tournament.
