He was on the run for almost five weeks, and now the alleged ax murderer has been arrested by Kalletal (Lippe district in North Rhine-Westphalia).
The 36-year-old was arrested in Brieskow-Finkenheerd, Brandenburg, near the Polish border, police and prosecutors said on Friday.
Elchin A. is said to have killed a sleeping 39-year-old in bed with an ax on June 18.
Then he is said to have raped his ex-girlfriend, who had an affair with the victim and was lying next to him in bed, in another room.
During a traffic check in Rinteln the following morning, the alleged perpetrator fled on foot.
His 24-year-old ex-girlfriend, who was sitting in the car, then reported the crime to the officers.
The investigators assume jealousy as a motive.
Exchange with Polish authorities
Special forces from the Brandenburg police arrested him late Thursday evening, it was said.
In addition, there was a close exchange with Polish law enforcement authorities.
In the suspected case that the man flees to the neighboring country, they would have been ready to access the police and public prosecutor's office.
In the course of Friday, A. is to be brought to Detmold and brought before a magistrate there.
They will announce the existing arrest warrant for murder, the message said.
