A new study tried to decipher once and for all what is the best sex position for heterosexual women when it comes to sexual arousal and reaching orgasm.

The study does have some shortcomings that we will talk about shortly, but the researchers found (are you ready for a surprise?) that the good old missionary position - provided that a pillow is placed under the woman's buttocks so that her pelvis is slightly raised - is the most successful position.

As reported in the journal Sexologies, a pair of researchers from New H Medical, a private gynecological clinic in New York, determined the most successful position for achieving a female orgasm by examining blood flow in the clitoris in five positions.

The doctors used an ultrasound scanner to measure the blood flow of a pair of subjects as they did it in five different positions for 10 minutes each: face-to-face with the woman on top ("the cowgirl"), face-to-face in a seated position ("lotus"), face-to-face with the male Above - with and without a pillow ("the missionary") and kneeling with the woman bent ("doggy style").

They found that the blood flow in the clitoris increased after every position except kneeling ("doggy style"). They also found that the face-to-face position with the man on top (the missionary position) with a table and a pillow under the woman's pelvis was the most successful in stimulating the blood flow in the clitoris and reaching orgasm. The missionary may be considered For the most banal position, but it turns out that this is also the most preferred position for women when it comes to orgasm - and the pillow is just as important.

"The kneeling/rear entry position produces the least amount of direct contact with the clitoris, and resulted in a negligible increase in blood flow compared to face-to-face positions," wrote the authors of the study, led by Dr. Kimberly Luby, as published in the Daily Mail, "The pillow was the key For maximum pleasure as it results in deeper penetration.

Pillows marketed for this purpose, often referred to as 'sex pillows' are usually firm and wedge-shaped - and provide a more accurate and consistent pelvic angle than conventional bed pillows."

They added: "Difficulty reaching orgasm is one component of sexual dysfunction.

Doctors can use these findings to advise patients about the sex positions that can help them reach orgasm."

Before we jump to any quick conclusions, there are a few caveats to consider when looking at the study results.

First, the study involved only one heterosexual couple - so there is no assurance that the results are representative of the wider population.

The article explains that the couple were "a couple of healthy doctors, both 32 years old" who were "known to the researchers". Of course, one could also argue that having sex under the watchful eyes of two researchers does not represent the way most people enjoy themselves in bed.

Despite these limitations, similar findings were previously obtained in larger studies.

One 2020 paper surveyed nearly 20,000 Czech heterosexual men and women and asked them about their preferences for 13 different sex positions.

He also showed that people tended to prefer face-to-face positions when they wanted to reach orgasm, although in this case the preferred position was found to be face-to-face with the woman on top.
