(ANSA) - ATHENS, JUL 24 - Greece is fighting three major forest fires in the north, south and east and fears further damage due to the heat wave that hit the country.

On the island of Lesbos, according to the firefighters, the fire that broke out yesterday continues to flare up, causing the evacuation of hundreds of tourists and residents of the seaside resort of Vatera.

This morning dozens of firefighters tamed the flames.

At least four homes were destroyed, according to state broadcaster Ert.

Since yesterday, Greece has been hit by a heatwave that is supposed to last ten days, and in some regions temperatures of 42 degrees are forecast that raise concerns about more fires.

In the north of the country, the firefighters, assisted by volunteers, continue to fight for the fourth consecutive day against a violent fire in the Dadia National Park, known for its colony of vultures.

The unusually difficult fire, according to fire brigade spokesman Yiannis Artopoios, forced the authorities to evacuate the village of Dadia last night and has already destroyed nearly 500 hectares of forest.

In the Peloponnese, the village of Chrysokelaria had to be evacuated last night due to a fire near Koroni.

The fire was circumscribed by the fire brigade around noon today.
