VENICE - "It would be magnificent", says Giulio Manieri Elia, confirmed for the next four years as the director of the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice, regarding the idea of creating the roof of the Gothic Court with an intervention that would allow to rethink and give order to the flow of visitors, with the definition of a central hub of the vast complex called to perform a function similar to that of Pei's Pyramid in the Louvre.

For "the largest museum of Venetian art in the world" - from the gold funds of the fourteenth century to the Vivarini, the Bellini, Giorgione, Tiziano, Tintoretto, Tiepolo, Canaletto, Guardi and Canova, up to the fullness of the nineteenth century - the intervention it would be the classic "icing" at the end of a vast cycle of interventions on the architectural and exhibition plans that began in 2006.

"Of course - Elia Manieri notes - the main objective is to complete the last lots of the project called 'Grandi Gallerie' by 2024, but it would be nice to start the project, still to be built, of the roof of the Gothic Court. a theme from a very complex architectural point of view that would lead, among other things, to the separation between entrance and exit, to dedicated paths for the permanent and temporary exhibitions. An architect who is attentive to the relationship with the existing buildings and with extensive experience will have to work on it. Museum. Everything needs to be studied and we would like to avail ourselves of the support of the General Directorate of Museums ".

For the moment there is a general idea, a sort of daydream - "we imagine it as a bubble, a very light structure that is naturally air-conditioned" - some of the funds are already available.

Meanwhile, "the working museum" - as the director defines it - which was the first to open its doors to the city after the pandemic - "was the sign of the primary function that a State museum must perform, that is, to serve citizens. "- work for the future.

In the works, by autumn, the completion of the Palladian corridor with works from the second half of the 16th century, while for the next year we are working on an exhibition on young Titian, starting from a painting in the collection, "Tobiolo e l'angelo ".

In September the exhibition, in dialogue with Canova's plaster casts also to celebrate its centenary, of the glass works by the Japanese artist Ritsue Mishima, as part of the Glass Week in Venice.

In Manieri Elia's office, on a mezzanine, there is a painting by Emilio Vedova, while below there are the rooms that house the exhibition of Anish Kapoor, one of the most famous contemporary artists in the world and one of his works by a black man " absolute "was placed in the first room of the Gallery next to the gold funds.

"Our core business - explains the director - is certainly the ancient, but the contemporary is part of our DNA" and recalls that in 1817, at the public opening of the Galleries, in the room together with the Renaissance paintings there was a work of the contemporary Canova, who later died in 1822.

If the encounter between ancient and contemporary - think of the presence of the Biennale - is in the most intimate spirit of Venice, for the Galleries it is also a viaticum in the process of meeting different audiences.

With Kapoor, the ticket office has seen a strong increase in young visitors between 18 and 25 years old since April, and in the first six months of the year, over 180,000 tickets were sold, compared to 305,000 in all of 2019, " which was also a good year ".

But the benefits go beyond tickets, as Baselitz's past exhibition in 2019 ended with the artist donating a drawing.

With regard to the vast collection of drawings and graphic works of the Galleries, a specific exhibition room should be open by the end of the year and the guest of honor in time, as soon as he has finished his rest period after the 2019 exhibition, will be the Vitruvian Man by Leonardo.
