For whom it really makes sense according to doctors

Many experts expect another corona wave in autumn.
They therefore call for the fifth vaccination for risk groups.
But only under one condition.
The corona virus has had the world firmly in its grip for more than two years.
But while many in this country hoped that the number of infections would fall again this summer, the disappointment is great.
Since the beginning of June, these have been rising steadily again, and the incidence value has currently leveled off at 700.
This means that there have been around 700 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants over the past seven days.
Fifth vaccination?
According to doctors, it makes sense for older people
However, that is significantly more than all the incidence values that the Robert Koch Institute calculated in the summers of the last two years.
One reason should also be the dominant BA.5 variant of the corona virus, which Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (59, SPD) considers even more dangerous than Omikron.

In addition, doctors are already warning that a new corona wave is expected in autumn.
For this reason, the President of the German Interdisciplinary Association for Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine (DIVI), Gernot Marx, is in favor of a fifth corona vaccination.
But: "Should there be a vaccine from October that protects against infection with the variants BA.4 or BA.5, a fifth vaccination would make sense," says Marx to the
Augsburger Allgemeine
.
But in order to enable good care, he adds, it is important to take precautions now and to provide centers and medical practices with sufficient supplies.

Fifth vaccination?
Influenza is also on the rise again in autumn
Currently, 61.8 percent of the population have received a booster vaccination, 7.5 percent a second booster vaccination.
A few days ago, leading EU authorities also spoke out in favor of a second booster vaccination for everyone over 60.
To date, however, the Standing Vaccination Commission (STIKO) in Germany only recommends it to people over the age of 70 and some risk groups.
However, Federal Minister of Health Lauterbach also advises people under the age of 60 to be vaccinated against Corona a fourth time, but only after prior consultation with the doctor treating them.

With the beginning of autumn, however, the flu season starts again, which is why DIVI President Marx also advises risk groups to get the flu vaccination.
"Otherwise, I fear that many people with flu and severe courses could further aggravate the situation in the intensive care units," said Marx.
The good news: According to the RKI, both vaccinations can be administered at the same time.
