(ANSA) - ROME, JULY 26 - In 2021, over 2 square meters of soil were consumed per second, the highest value in the last 10 years: with an average of 19 hectares per day, soil consumption returns to 70 square km of new artificial roofs in just one year.

Cement now covers 21,500 square kilometers of national land, of which 5,400, a territory as large as Liguria, concern buildings alone, which represent 25% of the entire land consumed.

This is the land use in Italy photographed by the Snpa 2022 Report.

Between 2006 and 2021 Italy lost 1,153 square kilometers of natural or semi-natural soil, with an average of 77 square kilometers per year, with an estimated economic damage of around 8 billion euros per year.

The loss, we read, occurred "mainly due to urban expansion and its collateral transformations, making the soil impermeable, in addition to the increase in flooding and heat waves, causing the loss of green areas, biodiversity and ecosystem services" .

Over 70% of national transformations are concentrated in urban areas by deleting precisely those soils that are candidates for regeneration, according to the Snpa 2022 Report which, together with the satellite cartography of the whole territory and the data banks available for each Italian municipality, provides the updated picture of the transformation processes of the land cover at national, municipal and provincial level.

Buildings are constantly increasing: over 1,120 hectares more in a year, spreading out between urban areas (32%), suburban and productive areas (40%) and rural areas (28%).

According to the Ispra report, "it is possible" to run for cover: one could start by intervening on the more than 310 square kilometers of unused and degraded buildings existing in Italy, an area equal to the extension of Milan and Naples.
