Öko-Test took on 21 ready-made tomato sauces.

A laboratory made a discovery in four sauces that should spoil the appetite of many:

  • Öko-Test took a closer look at 21 ready-made tomato sauces (more test reports here).

  • The test experts rated three sauces with the top mark “very good”, two failed completely.

  • For some products, however, Öko-Test also criticized the finding of mold toxins, too much salt and an unknown origin of the tomatoes.

Hardly any sauce is as popular with Germans as tomato sauce.

It regularly ends up on many people’s plates together with spaghetti – sometimes bought ready-made if you want it to be particularly quick.

Öko-Test took on 21 ready-made tomato sauces.

Three products received the top grade "very good" - while others should spoil our appetite because of proven mold toxins and other deficiencies, as reported by HEIDELBERG24.

Finished tomato sauce in the Öko-Test: Those were the test criteria

Öko-Test examined 19 tomato sauces in jars and two tetra pack variants.

The sauces, including eight organic products, were bought in supermarkets, discount stores and drugstores with prices ranging from 75 cents to just over 3 euros for 400 milliliters.

The tomato sauces were examined in the laboratory for problematic substances such as pesticide residues or mold toxins.

The salt content was also included in the evaluation, as was the smell and taste of the products.

In the tomato sauce comparison, Öko-Test looked closely at the packaging and list of ingredients of the products.

The consumer experts asked the suppliers questions about the origin of the tomatoes used.

In line with the tomato sauce test, Öko-Test also took a closer look at spaghetti in 2021.

Tomato sauce in the test: laboratory has mold toxins

The laboratory commissioned by Öko-Test found mold toxins in four of the 19 tomato sauces, which you certainly do not want on your plate.

Apart from that, these can also pose a health risk.

According to the test report in "Öko-Test Magazin 8-2022", mold toxins were detected in the "Napoli tomato sauce" from the Edeka brand Gut & Billig, for example.

In the case of the other three tomato sauces affected - organic products from dm, Alnatura and Rossmann - the experts draw attention to the fact that mold toxins were also detected in the organic products of these three suppliers in a tomato paste test by Öko-Test in 2021 .

Three of the products contaminated with mold toxins were rated "sufficient" or "poor" by Öko-Test - the "Alnatura Organic Classic Tomato Sauce" even failed completely with "insufficient" due to the particularly high content.

Öko-Test examines tomato sauce: These are the test winners

Three organic products scored "very good" in the Öko-Test.

The “La Selva Promodoro al basilico” is also praised in the test report as being particularly low in salt.

The three test winners at a glance:

  • Dennree Sugo Pronto ("Very Good")

  • La Selva Pomodoro al basilico (“Very Good”)

  • Rapunzel Tuscany Tomato Sauce (“Very Good”)

After all, seven conventional and inexpensive tomato sauces scored “good” in the Öko-Test – including, for example, the “Ja!
