Writer and Holocaust survivor Uri Orlev has died at the age of 91 Israel today

Orlev was born in Poland, and spent time in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. • He won many awards, including the Bialik Award, the Darling of the City of Jerusalem and the Deborah Omer Award.


The writer and translator Uri Orlev, died this morning (Tuesday) at his home while he was sleeping, and he is 91 years old. 

Orlev is best known for his books for children and youth, many of which dealt with the Holocaust, which he himself experienced as a child.

Orlev was born in Warsaw as York Orlowski to a secular Jewish family.

With the Nazi occupation, Orlev and his family members were transferred to the Warsaw ghetto.

His mother was murdered by the Nazis in the ghetto while his father was captured by the Russian army.

Orlev and his younger brother were hidden by a female relative in the Warsaw ghetto, but were discovered and deported to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, where they stayed for about two years.

Orlev wrote about his experiences in the war in his books, the best known of which are "Run Boy, Run" and "The Island on Bird Street", which was published in 1981, and has since been translated into many languages, and also works for theater and television.

After the war, Orlev and his brother immigrated to Israel and were taken in at Kibbutz Geniger in the Jezreel Valley.

In 1954 their father was located in Russia and the family was reunited in Israel.


Over the years, Orlev wrote over 30 books, mainly for children and youth.

In addition, he wrote scripts for television and radio and translated children's books from Polish to Hebrew.

Orlev was widely recognized in Israel and around the world, his books were translated into 38 languages ​​and he won many awards.

In 1996, Orlav was awarded the Andersen Prize for children's literature and became the first Israeli to win this prize.

In addition, Orlev also won the Andersen Award, the Yad Vashem Award for children's and youth literature, the Bialik Award, the Dear Jerusalem Award, and the Deborah Omer Award.

Orlev lived in the Yemin Moshe neighborhood in Jerusalem, he was married to Yeara and the father of four children.

His funeral will take place on Thursday at 17:30 at the cemetery in Kibbutz Ma'ale Ha'Hamme.
