Caution is advised when buying ready-made tomato sauces: Öko-Test discovered mold toxins in some ready-made sauces.

This also includes organic brands.

Munich - When things have to be done quickly, there is probably nothing easier than pasta with tomato sauce: cook the pasta, heat up the ready-made tomato sauce from the supermarket, mix it, done.

But buying ready-made tomato sauce is not always safe.

Öko-Test

found

this out when testing several manufacturers.

Öko-Test detects mold toxins in four tomato sauces

A total of 21 different ready-made tomato sauces were tested,

most of which came from a jar according to

Öko-Test .

The products included both organic and non-organic brands.

In particular, four of the sauces tested attracted negative attention after mold toxins were detected in them.

These pose a health risk: the toxins can be alternariol (AOH) or tenuazonic acid (TEA).

While aternariol damages the genetic material according to cell studies, tenuazonic acid is suspected of causing organ damage.

The mold toxins have now been discovered in four tomato sauces, and

n-tv

, among others, reported on the results of the tests .

Alternariol was proven in the Gut und guiger Napoli tomato sauce with herbs from Edeka, which is why the product was only rated “sufficient”.

Tenuazonic acid, on the other hand, was detected in three brands: the organic tomato sauce from Rossmann, dm and Alnatura.

According to

n-tv

, Alnatura's organic tomato sauce performed so poorly that it was even rated "inadequate" as a result.

If you prefer to make your own tomato sauce, you can do it very easily: A recipe for tomato sauce should be the best ever and only contain three ingredients.

Other criticisms of tomato sauces: too much salt, too little transparency

While no mold toxins were found in the remaining tomato sauces,

Öko-Test

criticized fourteen of the 21 products for having too high a salt content, since consuming too much salt is also harmful to health.

According to

n-tv

, for example, the sauces from Maggi and Cucina Nobile.

In addition, it was particularly noticeable with large suppliers that they did not make the origin of the tomatoes used transparent.

Canned tomatoes are also a popular ingredient in cooking.

But caution is also required here: because the remains of canned tomatoes should never be left in the can during further storage.
