Several chip manufacturers are currently recalling their products.
Increased amounts of tropane alkaloids have been detected in them, which can have serious consequences.
Munich – Friends of salty snacks have to be careful at the moment.
Three manufacturers have recalled various chip products.
They all gave the same reason for the recall: It cannot be ruled out that they are contaminated with tropane alkaloids.
Chips recall: Several varieties contain toxic substances
Tropane alkaloids are natural plant compounds and are found in certain field weeds such as deadly nightshade.
If parts are harvested together with the seeds during the harvest, the substances can get into food.
According to the Bavarian State Office for Health, the two tropane alkaloids atropine and scopolamine are “acutely very toxic”.
Even in small amounts, they can affect the heart rate and the central nervous system.
Subsequent symptoms can include drowsiness, headaches and nausea.
According to the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment, small children and infants are particularly at risk.
Because of the contamination, three chip manufacturers are now recalling their goods.
Transformer chips recalled - "do not consume"
The manufacturer Trafo warns about five different variants of its bio-chips.
All of them may contain atropine and scopalamine.
"You are asked not to consume the products and to return them to the store," the company writes in a press release.
The recall affects products with a best-before date between August 15, 2022 and January 9, 2023. Trafo lists the following varieties:

Dennree and Alnatura also recall chips
And the chips manufacturer Dennree is also recalling two of its products.
Here, too, consumption is not recommended because of tropane alkaloids.
Customers can return the goods and get a refund of the sales price even without a receipt.
According to the company, Dennrees is affected:

And Alnatura is also recalling two chip variations.
Alnatura corn chips natural (125g), Alnatura corn chips paprika (125g) and Alnatura corn rolls (125g) are affected with a best before date of December 7th, 2022.
Here, too, a warning is given against contamination with tropane alkaloids.
"As a precaution, we ask customers who still have a pack at home not to eat it.
You can of course bring them back and get a replacement,” says Alnatura.
Rossmann had previously recalled its "enerBIO tortilla chips paprika and sea salt with all best-before dates" for the same reason.
