At the Rewe supermarket, some customers will have to prepare for a change in the future.

The decision should benefit the environment.

Germany – The price increases for many products are causing problems for many customers.

When deciding which products end up in the shopping trolley, not only current food recalls play a role, but also special offers that supermarkets and discounters renew on a weekly basis.

Rewe now wants a radical change, as RUHR24 knows.

Rewe announces the end of a well-known product - millions of customers have to change

The printed brochures that inform customers about discounts should be a thing of the past at the supermarket in the future.

Rewe is now announcing this in a press release.

According to this, the company wants to take a first step towards saying goodbye to advertising as early as next month.

From the beginning of August 2022, Rewe intends to “reduce the number of paper flyers by 4 million,” it says.

The supermarket not only wants to focus more on digitization, but also do something for the environment.

According to the

German Press Agency (DPA)

, brochures and flyers are still among the most popular advertising media, despite social media and smartphones.

But at the same time, a huge amount of paper is required (further news about discounters and supermarkets at RUHR24).

After all, according to the

DPA

, more than 28 billion advertising brochures end up in household mailboxes throughout Germany every year.

That's why Rewe wants to take countermeasures in the future - to the delight of environmentalists.

Leif Miller, General Manager of the German Nature Conservation Union (NABU), describes this as an "important decision for the benefit of nature, which hopefully many competitors in the food retail sector will follow".

No more print brochures from Rewe – supermarket wants to save raw materials

And the supermarket, which soon plans to offer cash deposits, is taking it a step further.

Because from July 1, 2023, there should be no more printed brochures from Rewe.

This should save "more than 73,000 tons of paper, 70,000 tons of CO₂, 1.1 million tons of water and 380 million kWh of energy", according to the company's press release.

And how will customers be able to find out about bargains and offers from Rewe in the future?

The company wants to rely on digital ads.

"We want to reach customers of all age groups in a more modern and targeted manner using the media that they actually use," explains Lionel Souque, CEO of the REWE Group.

Digital brochures with offers from Rewe - innovation for customers also has disadvantages

Exactly what that looks like, however, remains a secret.

Currently, the offers valid for the respective week are already available on the homepage and for people who still like to leaf through the advertising, the brochure is available online, for example on a smartphone or tablet.

But there is also a disadvantage: "Offline" browsing consumes data volume on the way.

It makes sense, therefore, to use the opportunity primarily when you really want to shop.
