Nichelle Nichols, one of the protagonists of the famous TV series 'Star Trek', has died at the age of 89.
She announced her son Kyle about her on her Facebook page.
"I am sorry to inform you that a great star in the firmament no longer shines for us," she wrote.
"Last night, my mother, Nichelle Nichols, died of natural causes. Her light, however, like ancient galaxies, will remain for us and for future generations."
She the actress had played Lieutenant Uhura in Star Trek, the original series, from 1966 to 1969, and had been an example for all African American actresses in the United States.
In his memory, US President Jo Biden wrote: "Our nation will forever be indebted to inspiring artists like Nichelle Nichols, who have shown us a future in which unity, dignity and respect are cornerstones of any society."
