(ANSA-AFP) - LISBON, 01 AUG - A large forest fire is underway in Portugal, north of Lisbon, in Mafra, while the temperatures are getting hotter.
About thirty guests of a retirement home were evacuated for preventive purposes, a civil protection commander told Renascença radio.
About 400 firefighters with five aircraft went into action to put out the flames, civil protection said.
Residents tried to slow the advance of the flames by throwing water as the fire progressed in nearby forests.
Other large fires are also raging in the north and central Portugal, mobilizing more than a thousand firefighters, while a hot warning has been issued in various locations, with temperatures expected to be over 40 degrees, at least until tomorrow.
